Escape The Debt Trap; Opt For Credit Card Debt Relief

With people realising the ease and comfort of using credit cards the credit card industry is booming. Consequently the number of people falling into a debt trap on account of indiscriminate usage of credit cards is also increasing. People owe thousands to their credit card companies because they do not realise that they are spending beyond their means while swiping their credit card. And by the time they realise, the damage is already done. The best way to salvage this situation would be to opt for credit card debt relief.

First Things First
The first thing to do before opting for credit card debt relief is to stop using the credit card all together. If a person keeps on using the credit card it will prove difficult to devise a debt relief plan.

How To Go About Credit Card Debt Relief
Once the debtor has decided to do something about the debts he has incurred he can start looking for a suitable debt relief option. There are various alternatives available to him. One of the following three common options can be employed:

Debt Consolidation: If the debtor is in a position to pay back the debt, albeit slowly, he can opt for debt consolidation. He can consolidate all his debts with a credit card that charges low interest and clear off the single debt in instalments every month. He can consolidate his debt with the help of some low interest loan also. Once the consolidation is done the debtor can decide how much money he will be able to pay off in a month. The only hitch here is that the debtor must have strong willpower to stick to the plan he has made.

Debt Negotiation: If the credit standing of the debtor is not good and he is not in a financial position to pay off his debts monthly, debt consolidation will not work for him. Then debt negotiation is one option available to him, provided he decides to make a lump sum payment. For better results it would be better if the debtor lets a debt relief company negotiate with the creditors on his behalf. The debt relief company can negotiate with the creditors to accept some money, generally about 50 percent of the outstanding money and then write off the rest.

• Bankruptcy: But if the debt is totally out of control and there is no way to escape from the debt trap then filing for bankruptcy is the only way out. This is the last resort for a debtor because once he declares bankruptcy, his credit standing totally fails. He will find it difficult to get further loans. But the positive aspect of filing for bankruptcy is that it will enable him to make a fresh start leaving all debts behind him.
Here the debtor must remember that opting for credit card debt relief cannot become a regular feature. He must be careful not to get into such a situation again.
